Poetry
I read an article about President Russell M. Nelson who turned age 98 on September 9, 2022. He was asked to restrict his acceptance speech to 30 seconds regarding an award that he was receiving. He wrote a short, impressive poem for his acceptance speech. That inspired me to write the following short poem just in case I might someday need a short acceptance speech. Referring to the end of my life, I have called the poem “My Two-Minute Drill:”
My Two-Minute Drill
I, an undeservedly favored son of God,
Born of goodly parents who wisely spared not the rod,
Choicest of habitations from sea to shining sea,
Blessed with devoted wives for my happiness a key.
In my children and their offspring my joy will be.
Christ, my atoning Savior, has mercifully set me free,
And fast welded links to my posterity.
Keeping his commandments—my guiding light.
I will labor and serve till that final earthly night.
